When You Need Love Most - a Poem on Self-Love
Dear reader,
I once heard of a sacred ritual that belongs to a tribe deep in the forest. When a member commits a sin, they gather around the fire. Placing the culprit in the center, each tribe member recalls one act of kindness he ever did.
They remind him of who he is: a human being capable of goodness. They give him love when he deserves it least. Because they know that’s when he needs it most.
By doing that, they love his shadow into light.
May you learn to do the same for you.
When You Need Love Most
when shame pours hot water on your face,
love yourself.
when failures cut your skin with razor-sharp words of
“should’ve known better”, “could’ve done better”, “would’ve been better”,
love yourself.
when you hold your face above the toilet seat,
regurgitate self-disgust
taste the acid of regrets,
love yourself.
when he walks away,
and betrayal burns your bones, or
when you walk away,
and guilt flaps its wings in the air like a bat,
love yourself.
when you curl up between the sheets at dawn,
your body - a shophouse robbed empty by a thief you invited, begging
for a love that was never yours.
love yourself.
when everything you thought was real disappears overnight like sandcastles,
love yourself.
when you’ve fail, once again, to love yourself,
love yourself.
when you think you cannot love yourself any longer,
not this time,
not with a mistake this big, this bad, this unforgivable,
love yourself.
love yourself when you deserve love the least
because that’s when you need love the most.
